Deeper Mindfulness is a new advanced Mindfulness-Based Program (MBP) curriculum that builds upon the foundational principles of Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) to explore feeling tone (vedana) in depth. The Deeper Mindfulness course explores how recent advances in neuroscience combined with the millennia-old contemplative mindfulness and related meditation practices can support an exploration of “feeling tone”.

This 2-day workshop will provide health care professionals and educators the opportunity to study and experience the foundational underpinnings, mindfulness meditations and specific exercises that are the framework of the Deeper Mindfulness program. The themes, rationales, and practice skills of each Deeper Mindfulness class session will be reviewed, discussed and practiced.

In this experiential workshop, the main focus will be cultivating an increased awareness of the “background color” that guides one’s thoughts, feelings and emotions, which serve as the tipping point from which adaptive responses are possible in the service of cultivating wellbeing. In addition, we’ll explore equanimity as a key therapeutic stance towards feeling tone, and as a foundation for personal mindfulness practice.

Completion of this 2 day experiential training, in combination with completion of a participant-observership of the 8 week Deeper Mindfulness program, will allow mindfulness teachers to deliver the Deeper Mindfulness program themselves.

Objectives

At the completion of the workshop, participants will have learned:

  • Define feeling tone, and describe how it is worked with in the Deeper Mindfulness program
  • Describe the key themes and content of each of the 8 sessions
  • Explain how to engage the client in the treatment plan
  • Practice inquiring into the experience of equanimity towards feeling tone

Teaching Approach

Andrea and Mark have trained in delivering the Deeper Mindfulness program with Dr. Mark Williams, and bring their over 40 years of combined experience providing teacher training in Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy and Mindfulness integrated Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to this experiential training.

This workshop is closely modeled on the Deeper Mindfulness 2 day training as delivered by Dr. Mark Williams.

Program Description

Over the course of two days, you’ll have the opportunity to be guided through key aspects of the Deeper Mindfulness program, practice delivering components of the program in teachbacks in triads, and engage in large group discussion of what was learned.

We will use a specific structure to explore Week 1 to 7 as follows:

1. Review of Session 1-7 Content (modeled by Mark and Andrea)

  • Explaining the session theme
  • Guiding one of the practices
  • Journaling and inquiring

2. Teachbacks by Participants (in groups of 3 or 4)

  • Explaining the session theme
  • Guiding one of the practices, journaling and inquiring
  • Brief discussion/feedback on guiding

3 .Discussion

  • Large group reflection

  • We recommend that you have taught a minimum of five rounds of 8-week courses.
  • Reading Deeper Mindfulness: The New Way to Rediscover Calm in a Chaotic World by Mark Williams and Danny Penman
  • Please note that completing an 8 week Deeper Mindfulness participant-observership is not a prerequisite for taking this two day workshop.
