Chapin Mill is situated on a 135-acre country estate donated to the Rochester (New York) Zen Center by a former member. The grounds include a spring-fed mill pond and the original grist mill built in 1811. Perennial flower beds line many of the walkways that wind within the grounds, and large open meadows, a simple labyrinth, a swimming area, orchard and walking trails are some of the highlights of this idyllic location.

The multi-building complex includes a commercial kitchen, magnificent gathering spaces with reclaimed beams, and dormitory accommodations for more than 50 people. The crown jewel of the facility is the zendo: for the first time in the Center’s more than 40-year history, members are able to sit in a space that was designed specifically for meditation. With dozens of windows opening to the fresh air and tranquil sounds of the countryside, the Chapin Mill zendo provides an ideal setting for quieting the mind and engaging in a meditation retreat training.

During springtime in upstate New York, the landscape is striking in its lush greenery and arrays of colorful blooming wildflowers. The weather is temperate and marked by occasional rain, but is generally pleasant and comfortable.

Accommodations are retreat-style in that most rooms are double-occupancy, neatly but simply furnished, and have easy access to common bathrooms that are at most a few steps down the hall. If you do not request a specific roommate, we will assign one for you. All bedrooms are carpeted, and feature a desk and clothing bureau. Linens, blankets and towels are provided.

We recommend that you fly into the Rochester airport (ROC) and will provide you with a link to an online bulletin board for coordinating shared rides from the airport to the retreat center.

Elohee Center

Sautee Nacoochee, GA, 30571, United States

Website

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the 216 acres of Elohee is just 2 hours north of the Atlanta Airport. Elohee is a retreat center where guests can take part in weekend or week-long educational and experiential courses related to stress-reduction, self-transformation, community building, health maintenance and improvement, trauma (including cancer) recovery, art, music, ecology and sustainability.

Elohee’s mission is to be a place, rooted in nature, for deepening human awareness, facilitating the healing of mind and body, and transforming individuals and society. Such an endeavor involves the integration of opposites: body and spirit, silence and activity, heaven and earth, technology and nature, individual and community. When this integration or balance is achieved, healing naturally ensues. Through teachings such as meditation, movement, yoga, art, and sustainability, Elohee provides an ideal environment for healing on many levels.

We seek to provide a home where sharing and growth occur in an intimate and personal setting. We are also conscious of operating in partnership with nature and respectfully draw upon nature’s inherently transformative power. We honor the ways in which nature can help us awaken as individuals, helping us become the basis for further transformation in the world.
Elohee is a family-based endeavor. Our intention is to create balance, wisdom, and healing: from our family to you and your family, to the wider community, and to the family of man.

The UCSD Center for Mindfulness will set up an online bulletin board for coordinating shared rides from the airport to the center.
