Bio

Dr. Slater is a 1987 graduate of the UCSD School of Medicine, completed the Santa Monica/UCLA Family Medicine Residency in 1990, and the Andrew Weil Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, Tucson, in 2015. He completed a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Geriatrics in 1994.

He spent 18 years with Kaiser Permanente in a full-scope bilingual family medicine practice (Spanish) in South Bay San Diego with leadership positions, before transitioning to UCSD to a faculty position in 2008. That transition allowed Dr. Slater to be an executive committee member and integral participant in the startup of the Center for Integrative Medicine at UCSD, pursue roles in resident and medical student education, family medicine and integrative research, and most importantly patient care in both family medicine and integrative medicine.

He served nearly ten years as one of the core team physicians for the San Diego Padres, is a past president of the San Diego Academy of Family Physicians, and was named a San Diego Top Doctor for seven consecutive years.

Dr. Slater is passionate about the whole-person integrative model of health care, and currently sees patients both in the UCSD Center for Integrative Medicine and Long COVID Clinics, providing integrative consultations and care. In 2023 he transitioned away from the standard mainstream primary care physician role.
