Rheumatoid Arthritis and Anti-Inflammatory Diet - with the Division of Rheumatology

Requirements: Men or women, any age, with rheumatoid arthritis*

Dr. Guma from the Division of Rheumatology at UCSD, together with the Center for Integrative Nutrition and Research, is conducting a study of a 3-month long program to test nutritional changes for patients with rheumatoid arthritis. *Any patient with rheumatoid arthritis without food allergies can participate. There will be four, one-hour, face-to-face visits required. Participation will also involve education and support in the adoption of a healthy and nutritionally balanced anti-inflammatory diet. The program includes a detailed baseline orientation, expert nutrition counseling and education, and telephone coaching.

Ophthalmology and Diet – Shiley Eye Institute

Enrollment: Currently Enrolling
Study Duration: 12 months (6 months observation, 6 months active)
Requirements: Men or women ages 18-80 years with stable open angle glaucoma (OAG)*

Compensation: up to $225

Interested in Food as Medicine for Eye Health?

Glaucoma affects about 80 million people worldwide and is the leading cause of blindness. Presently, there is no cure, yet evidence suggests prevention and early treatment for glaucoma is successful with the use of food as medicine. Glaucoma presents as either progressive open angle glaucoma (POAG) or closed angle glaucoma. POAG is the most common, representing at least 90% of cases. Many characteristics of this condition, including high intraocular pressure (IOP), have been linked to systemic metabolic and cellular health and research is beginning to show evidence of influence by dietary modifications on outcomes related to glaucoma.

Shiley Eye Institute and the Krupp Center for Integrative Research (KCIR) are conducting a study to examine the health effects of a wholefoods, plant-based (WFPB) diet on the eyes. What to Expect:

- Learn basics of healthy cooking and try new therapeutic recipes  

- Develop a deeper understanding of the energetics of food, cooking and eating 

- Attend cooking classes and group meetings u Involve support person(s) in cooking classes, groups, shared meals, or whenever possible

- Blood samples will be collected to have a better understanding of your DNA, diet and visual function

- Various eye tests will be performed to have a better understanding of your current eye health

Integrative Prehabilitation Program for patients facing surgery

Enrollment: Currently Enrolling
Study Duration: 3-5 months
Requirements: Men or women aged 18-75 years undergoing major abdominal surgery for gastrointestinal cancer*

Enrolled participants will participate in a three- to five-month integrative pre- and postoperative program inclusive of nutrition, exercise, and anxiety management. To qualify you must enroll in the study up to 3 months but no less than 4 weeks before surgery. Benefits of this study include working with a team of UCSD professionals: Mindfulness Coach, Registered Dietitian, and Exercise Physiologist! Provided to you at no cost: • mindfulness sessions • dietary counseling • exercise consultations If you are aged 18-75 years undergoing major abdominal surgery for gastrointestinal cancer and meet other eligibility criteria, you may qualify to participate!
