Mindfulness-Based Strategic Awareness Training (MBSAT)

Mindfulness-Based Strategic Awareness Training (MBSAT) is a next-generation 8-week mindfulness training in wise decision-making for both leaders and individuals.

MBSAT enables you to:

  • Reduce biases and fixed beliefs
  • Achieve mental clarity, open awareness
  • Make wiser decisions in professional and private life

We tend to be in a state of agitation, either visible or latent and live in a reactive mode without being aware of the full array of options and the wide-ranging effects of our decisions.

MBSAT triggers a deep learning process and facilitates strategic awareness to enhance a fulfilling life. Its training method integrates the latest findings in Neuroscience that view the human brain as a continuous-time active inference system that constantly anticipates rather than reacting to stimuli.

The 8-week MBSAT training program comprises four components:

  1. The learning process begins with Minding our BETA.
    We experience our lives through four interconnected doorways: our Body sensations, Emotions, Thoughts and Action impulses. In MBSAT we call these fourfold experiential doors BETA. With the MBSAT training method we learn to bring them into sync so that we gain more balance, leading us to more sustainable wellbeing and success.
  2. The next component is Minding Our Portfolio of Beliefs (POB).
    Our BETA is driven by deep-rooted, often unconscious beliefs and biases. This can be a source of difficulties in our lives and distort our pathway. With MBSAT we learn to become aware, to uncover and transform unhelpful conditioning. We gain clarity in our minds and new perspectives for personal growth. Minding our POB allows us to realize our full potential.
  3. The program continues with Minding Our Social Experience (SOE).
    We are all embedded in an integrated social and natural system. The social system is composed of family, people at work, friends, colleagues and other contacts. The natural system is composed of our immediate natural environment as well as the broader ecosystem of Planet Earth that is our home. MBSAT teaches us to mind our social and natural experience to build constructive and mutually enriching relationships in all contexts of life and to enhance the sustainability of our social and natural systems. As such we cultivate a sense of caring for us, others, and our environment.
  4. The fourth component is Minding the Strategic Adaptation of Our Life (SAL)
    We live in a continuously changing world. Getting on in this volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous – VUCA environment requires a critical competence: the ability to respond skillfully and with foresight to continuous change by perceiving and actively inferring creative opportunities and options. In MBSAT we call this competence Strategic Adaptation in Life – SAL. We learn to cope mindfully and strategically with undesired changes, thus facilitating an active life that provides wellbeing for ourselves and others.

Program Characteristics

MBSAT differs markedly from other mindfulness-based programs given its secular orientation and practical, implementation-oriented approach. Its signature practices, terminology and language are designed specifically for an active, non-clinical target population. Hence MBSAT is exceptionally well positioned to assist people in the workplace and other non-clinical participants in improving the quality of their personal and professional lives.

MBSAT is internationally recognized as an effective and valuable skill-building program that responds to people’s needs in our fast changing and stressful VUCA world, characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. Amongst other it is part of the official skill-building program of the government of Singapore that is giving education highest priority in its policies.

The program is offered in eight weekly sessions of 2.5 hours each. It combines Mindfulness and Computational Applied Neuroscience. Furthermore, it integrates the science of Positive Psychology, Behavioral Finance, Systems Dynamics, Behavioral Strategy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – CBT and Aikido principles. It is designed to help deal effectively with challenges in personal and professional life as well as in business and offers transformational tools that lead to gains on all three levels: individual, team and organization.

Learning Outcome

Participants learn through deep continuous-time mindful, active inferring to cultivate their strategic awareness by becoming aware of their conditioning and personal patterns, gaining equanimity and a clear, open mind that allows to perceive, create and capitalize on personal and business opportunities for maximum potential and skillful outcomes.

With increased strategic awareness, you become a better decision maker by cutting through the noise in today’s ever changing and complex environment to achieve authentic well-being.

8-week MBSAT Course Fee

The course includes the handouts, guided meditations and instruction and is offered for $620 ($570 if you pay in full 30 days in advance for the course).

UC San Diego Employees may take the course for $520 (or $470 if you pay in full 30 days prior to the start of class).

Cancellation Policy

A refund (minus your $50 non-refundable and non-transferable deposit) will be made for cancellations in writing via email to mindfulness@health.ucsd.edu prior to the 2nd class will. There will be no refund after the 2nd class.

In the unlikely event that the course is canceled, UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness is responsible only for a full refund of the registration fee and not for transportation, hotel accommodations or any miscellaneous expenses.
